My dad ignited my passion for running when he bought me my first pair of waffle racers back in 1977, put me in a 5k with zero training and a pair of too tight jean shorts, and cheered me to the finish line as I hobbled in with quarter size blisters rubbed raw between my legs. Forty-two years later, and I find myself still wanting to hit the roads.
What motivates me to keep moving? For me, it’s new @lululemon workout gear and my love for candy! The only real difference between my pounding the pavement now and when I was 10 is that I no longer care about winning, and my running gear has improved a whole heck of a lot. Running isn’t just exercise. It’s therapy. It’s how I stay in shape not only during the holiday season but also year round. It’s a dose of discipline that tests me.
When anyone asks, I’m quick to tell them that lululemon leggings and tights are by far my favorites! The past two marathons and every other race and training run I’ve endured over the past several years have all been chafe free thanks to lululemon! I especially love the Speed Up Tight 28″ Full-On Luxtreme. The Luxtreme fabric is sweat-wicking, breathable, and has four-way stretch. With easy-access pockets conveniently located on each leg, I have the perfect place to store my phone, keys, chapstick, and anything else I might need.
Another favorite is the Wunder Under Super High-Rise Tight Full-On Luxtreme. These versatile tights fit like a second skin. I find myself throwing these tights on most often and even find them comfortable for running. For a shorter length, the Wunder Under High-Rise Tight 25″ Full-On Luxtreme is a good choice. This is the length my daughter Lexi gets (She is 5’3).
On top, I love the Rest Less Pullover, or for colder days, the Swiftly Wool Pullover makes a great base layer. The Outrun the Elements 1/2 Zip is a cozy, stretchy pullover that keeps me warm with the so soft Rulu fabric (my favorite!). For an extra layer, the Switch Please Shacket Reversible has sweat-wicking light fabric on one side, and water-repellent Glyde fabric on the other. This piece combines the insulated warmth of your favorite puffy coat with your favorite flannel.

How I Stay Fit
Staying fit through the holidays with lululemon is no different from staying fit throughout the year. I’m not going to lie. It’s not easy. Some days are too hot or too cold or too windy. I have to remind myself of the great Coach Bowerman quote: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just soft people.”
I try to run 3-4 miles at least three days a week. I feel better not only physically but also mentally. I know it sounds weird, but when I workout, I eat better, too. Each mile I run is difficult, so I relate the food I eat to miles. For example, I love Milk Duds! I don’t allow myself to have them that often though because a normal sized box equals 170 calories or 1.7 miles of running. I tell myself I can eat the Milk Duds, but then I will need to run 1.7 miles to burn the calories of the Milk Duds. That’s truly how I keep from overindulging. It’s all about balance! Knowing the effort it takes to run those 1.7 miles keeps me in check!
Every day is a challenge with the voice in my head that tells me to quit running. I never regret a workout, but most days, motivating myself to move is a challenge. With each step I take, with each hill I run, I remind myself that few are willing to endure the loneliness and pain of preparation. And there’s always the voice in my head telling me, “My knees hurt. I should just give up. Maybe I am soft. Maybe I will stay in bed today.”
But, I set my alarm. I get out of bed and keep moving. You know why? Because I am a winner, and I’ve already beaten the voice in my head that tells me to quit. To me, that’s better than any medal. Besides, staying fit has to do more with my wanting to see my grandbabies’ grandbabies and staying healthy than it does anything else.
In a weird way, too, having new workout gear motivates me as well. A new pair of tights or even something as simple as a new running bra will get me excited enough to want to go for a run! I hope you find whatever it is that keeps you moving. 🙂
