One of the questions I receive the most is about the paint colors in my house. For me, painting is the quickest, most inexpensive way to update a room, if you do it yourself. I am almost embarrassed to say that I have repainted my entire house, by myself (I am too frugal to pay someone) at least three times in the past 11 years. Some rooms have been repainted more like 5 times!
Painting Is In My Blood!
Both my grandmothers were artists, and though I am not artistic in the sense of painting a beautiful picture, I feel weirdly at peace with a brush in my hand, transforming a room. When you see me on Insta-Stories repainting something because I got the urge, that is truly how all my painting projects come about: on a whim! For now, these are the current paint colors in my home.

Did u paint your cabinets yourself? I’d love to try it, but am a lil’ skeered, haha!
I have touch up painted my cabinets but do not like to paint them at all. I did repaint my built in book case in my study. If you look closely, the job I did is pretty pathetic. If you do try it, I would do a small space like a bathroom first.
Good luck,
Shalia
Hello Shaila and Sandy!
Ok I’m looking at repainting the exterior of our house. I want to do black trim and paint the house white. ( I’ll be later replacing front door to a cedar) I need ideas on what colors you would suggest.
I love the iron ore that you’ve used before, but not real sure on whites, I think sandy you settled on alabaster, which is all over my interior. What else would you suggest, and what sheen do you suggest for both? I have no clue, just want it to be timeless. Love following you ladies, and thanks for the help!!

Hi, Lacey,
What Sandi did was she tried different paint samples on her brick. Seeing the different swatches was helpful in making the decision. The colors she tried out are saved on our highlights “paint”. Anything black and white will remain a timeless look! Good luck, and sorry it took us so long to respond. I’m not sure how this message was overlooked.

Hi, may I know how do you repaint your family room since you have a high ceiling and do you still repaint that yourself or hiring? Your house is so beautiful and thanks god im finding someone like you I can share with about the wall colors.
I do paint the family room myself because I am too cheap to pay someone. I have an extension ladder I use, but it is not ideal, and I have to climb up and down it numerous times to trim out the ceiling. The last time I painted, I borrowed a tall ladder similar to a scaffold from our electrician. Lowe’s and Home Depot both rent equipment, but I usually just tackle the project myself.
Could you please tell me how you paint the wall in your family room with high ceiling?
I paint as high up as I can reach with a normal ladder, but when I have to trim out the ceiling, I bring in an extension ladder and go up and down that thing so many times I can hardly walk the next day. The last time I painted, I did the ceiling as well, so I borrowed a scaffold like ladder from our local electrician. I know those ladders are available to rent from Lowe’s and Home Depot as well.
I’m trying to find black accent wall color and I can’t seem to locate it??
The black accent wall color is Sherwin Williams Iron Ore.
Hi! I just found you on IG today, so I’m new to your blog. Your home and work are stunning! We are in the process of building. My kitchen cabinets will be white and I will have shiplap as my backsplash. Should I paint the cabinets and the shiplap the same color (ex. both Eider White) or should I do 2 different whites (shiplap Eider White and cabinets Extra White)? I was curious what you would suggest. 🙂
I think I would do them all the same color, but I am also a believer in looking on Pinterest and seeing what others have done. I am such a visual person, so sometimes what I think would look amazing can turn out not so fabulous. Ha! I am sure it will turn out beautiful! Thank you for following us.

I love to paint too!! I repainted my bedroom like 4 times and bathroom 5! Thanks for the color info! I am looking for a nice white for my bathroom and I love the Eider White!
Sylvia,
You sound like me. I think you will love the Eider White. It is such a pretty color.
In some photos, the SW Eider White looks like a very soft, light gray. I love this! Is it the lighting? Does it truly look white or gray in certain rooms? Your taste is exquisite!
It does look like a soft gray in some lighting; other times, it looks white. I refer to it as a white more than a gray, and that is why Sandi and I consider it the perfect white because it is not too stark. Thank you!
Hi Shalia,
I really love your son’s room paint colors. I’ve chosen On the Rocks for my great room, kitchen, hallways and bedrooms. But now seeing it in your son’s bedroom up against the accent wall, I fear it may be too dark for an overall color. Yet when I tried the larger swatch of Eider White, it seemed too light. I’m going for a monocramatic look. How did you decide? I just adore your colors and sense of style! Thank you!
Hi, Kathy,
Thank you so much for your compliment. When choosing colors, sometimes it is a guessing game. Colors came change appearance from room to room and even from house to house, depending on how much light is shown. When I chose On the Rocks, I searched through several Pinterest pictures of homes using that color before making my final choice. I love the color, but it does have a purple undertone. We used the color in my daughter’s home, and there are times in the day that it looks lilac. Other times in the day, it is our favorite hue. After choosing Eider White, I will say it is my favorite most perfect choice for now. It has a warm gray undertone. Only when the sun shines brightly does it look too light, but I love the look.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Dear Shalia,
Though I do love your style this question is more about health and wellness. I really want to start running but am scared as I have some torn cartilage in one knee and have had shin splints in the past. I am in my 40s….I do work out 5 times a week on my elliptical and walk my dogs a couple of miles a day- weather permitting! How do you recommend getting started? Thank you for for being so honest & authentic….you really inspire me.
LaTonya,
Thank you for such a candid question. Too often, (I coached for years), I hear people say they have bad knees and use that as a reason not to do any kind of running. I, in fact, have torn cartilage and am in need of a knee replacement in the near future. Of course, pounding pavement isn’t the best thing for the knees, but for me, pounding pavement and feeling a little pain is easier to deal with than the depression that ensues if I don’t run.
As for shin splints, start out slowly and in a good pair of shoes. You might consider going to an actual running store to get fitted. Until I did this, I suffered plantar fasciitis for years. The Couch to 5K is a good place to start on a running program because it allows you to progress slowly and gradually. Hopefully, in doing so, you will not develop shin splints. Always, listen to your body, however!
I actually trained Sandi to run a marathon on Couch to 5K when she had zero running experience. We started in January with the program, and by March, she could run 3 miles without walking! We progressed from there, and a year later, she ran her first 1/2 marathon, and two years later, she finished a full marathon. When she said she wanted to run a marathon, I made sure she progressed slowly, and it was a two year process to get there.
I hope this information helps, and thank you for your kind words.

Can you please tell me where that console table is from? I have been stalking your ig, liketoknowit and now here!
Camille,
The console table is from 405 Imports in Norman, Oklahoma.

Hi!
Is there a nice black paint you recommend for an exterior trim color of a home? I’m hearing that I should lean to more of a charcoal black?
Thanks!
Both Sandi and I like the color Tricorn Black. That’s what my exterior doors are painted.
Can I borrow you Shaila to help me paint my family room? I’ll pay in food and wine! I’m a chicken on ladders because I have a fear of heights! I promise I’ll have the paint on hand and we will laugh, a lot!
My last name is spelled DUREN, fat fingers! ??
Haha!
Lorri,
Haha! Can you believe I’ve painted the tall ceilings in my living room? I’ve gotten myself in some predicaments because I am too frugal to pay someone else to paint for me. You know I love to laugh, but anytime I am not painting at my house, my mom has a project for me at hers. LOL.
Have a great day,
Shalia
I have to say that my best friend told me about you two lovely ladies and I’m hooked ! You two seem so genuine and are just too much fun. Thank you for sharing your lives with us and brightening our days !
I absolutely love your style. I have been really wanting to try white walls in my main living area/kitchen. I have Benjamin Moore White Dove cabinets and trim. Do you think the Eider White would pair well with that ?
Hi, Michelle,
Thank you for your sweet words! We both use Eider White in our houses. It is the perfect white, in our opinion, and pairs well with any color. I think you will love it!
Shalia
can I ask your opinion on if you should use matte or eggshell for family room living room and bedrooms/ Would you use different finish in the kitchen. Thanks so much
We use eggshell on all our walls unless it’s a really dark color that we don’t want to show a sheen. Eggshell is easier to clean and doesn’t blemish as easily.
What finish do you use on walls, trim, cabinets, etc? Flat? Eggshell, gloss?
Hi, Ashleigh,
I almost always use a satin finish unless I’m paining with iron ore or a dark color. Then, I will often use a flat paint.
Hi,
I have a bedroom I am painting Benjamin Moore white dove and I’m looking for an accent color. I’m looking at Tricorn Black. The white dove is an eggshell finish. Should I use a flat for the tricorn black?
Hi,
A flat is going to give you a more leathered look. The eggshell will be easier to clean. You will probably have to do a couple more coats of the eggshell to get an even look, but in the long run, it’s worth it.
It will be beautiful!
