The saying “the kitchen is the heart of the home” is especially true for my family. Ours is constantly in use and we love spending time there. Although there is no shortage of photos on our Instagram, I have never done a before and after blog post.

Kitchen Before
Most of the makeovers in our home evolve over time. This is out of necessity because Rob and I rarely, if ever, hire contractors. We are both very frugal and prefer to do the work ourselves.

If you watch our Stories, Rob (aka Rob Villa) refers to his money as “his babies”. He is very attached to them. Thankfully, Rob is very handy!

Farmhouse Kitchen Makeover
We started working on our kitchen immediately after we bought the house. Rob moved the stove from the island to the wall. Then he built a new island for storage and range hood.

We painted and glazed the cabinets, which gave it a cozy “farmhouse” look. At this point, my kitchen makeover started to get attention on social media. We were contacted by Houzz! You can read the article, here.

New Kitchen Island
This is the 5th house that we have renovated together. You think I would learn. Every time that we are going through a major renovation, I vow that I am never doing another one again. Until the next time, I get an itch to do another project.

My personal design style is always evolving. I initially liked cream colored cabinets and the warm tones in my kitchen but the protective coating that they used turned yellow over time. That’s when Rob and I decided to decided to paint the cabinets the same color as the walls, Sherwin William’s Pure White.

Rob also built a new modern island to open up the kitchen. We also decided to paint the cabinets white. For this project, I used Bethany from Reclaimed Cottage.

The room is dark and painting the cabinets white instantly made the room seem so much brighter! We also updated our lighting to complete the look!

We decided to paint the island Sherwin Williams Iron Ore. It matches our faux shiplap accent wall. You can find all of the colors in my home, here. If you want to know Shalia’s colors, you can find them in this post.

Although the island is the exact same size, it looks larger. We even reused the granite.

The Finishing Touches
In order to soften up the space and give it a more modern feel, I also purchased new chairs for my table. If you can believe it, they are from Walmart!

I love rugs. So I swap them out frequently to give my rooms a quick refresh. I purchased the Diamond Dalia rug and it gave my kitchen the contemporary look I was going for. You can find all of our rugs in both of our homes, here.

We also updated the lighting over my table with a unique statement light from George Oliver. You can find all of the lighting from The Spoiled Home, here. Rob and I added a faux shiplap accent wall in our kitchen. We used the same technique in Shalia’s home for her grandaughter’s nursery. You can read our tutorial on how to plank a wall on a budget, here.
