I recently asked on stories what mothers want for Mother’s Day. Several moms wanted “me time” “to be left alone” while others wanted “quality time with all [their] kids.” Certainly no judgment here! At different stages in my life, I’ve longed for both. Listening to the waves crash, feeling the breeze and the ocean spray, and smelling the mix of salt and seaweed, I took some alone time on a beach in Cabo a few weeks ago. On that particular day, I came across a large rock with several smaller rocks stacked on top. I found a larger rock to sit on and watch the waves roll in and thought about how each rock signified an intention of thankfulness offered up to each other in need. The act of balancing stones carries with it the practice of patience and a physical effort of creating balance. I’ve struggled with finding balance since becoming an empty nester. I never visit a beach without walking the shoreline because I feel no tension there, only peace. Alone time is no longer at the top of my wishlist. I FaceTimed my kids that day, “Wish you were here.” Three weeks ago when I stumbled upon stacked stones, I like to believe it was intentional. I thank God for the beauty in that moment and reminder that in each stage of life, I know, deep down on some level, what I need most. If I align my life with those priorities, I will feel balanced!
