Today, we are sharing a teen boy’s bedroom before and after with you. I have posted pics on social media of my son Jonathan’s room before. But I don’t believe you can truly appreciate the transformation until you see the before & after photos.
Boy’s Bedroom Before
Rob and I worked hard to transition this room into a meaningful space for our son. It went from a sports-themed little boy’s bedroom into a modern teen retreat. For the record, the camo and OSU decor are from the previous owners.

You thought I was kidding you about the transformation, right? This is what the room looked like when Rob and I bought the house.

Boy’s Bedroom Makeover
This makeover is living proof that paint can transform a room. The pics below already look different just with paint and we were just getting started! The first piece of furniture we bought was a bed and Rob made a faux headboard out of reclaimed wood. This also served as the focal point of the room. Eventually, we purchased a navy blue upholstered bed.

Originally, we painted the entire room Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. That alone was a game-changer. When we ripped up the carpet and added the hardwood floors there was no looking back.

Later, I repainted the room Sherwin Williams Eider White. We added a diagonal accent wall, in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore. Shalia and I have both used this color before. My faux shiplap wall in my kitchen is also painted this same hue. Shalia has used it in several rooms in her home. The most notable spaces are her adorable nursery for her granddaughter and her elegant home office. It is the perfect dark neutral paint.

DIY Gallery Ledge
My husband Rob (aka Rob Villa!) built a gallery ledge out of poplar wood for above his bed. It was very inexpensive and extremely easy to build. You can find similar plans to build it, here.

Rearranging the furniture also allowed us to add a sitting area to his room. It is the perfect place for Jonathan to hang out with his friends.

The print above his bed I purchased from my friend Carissa’s shop, CC + Mike. It is a stunning piece and a nod to our Native American heritage.

Free Downloadable Baseball Quotes
Jonathan plays competitive baseball. When choosing the pictures for his new gallery ledge in his room, I wanted to make sure I included a baseball quote. But when I looked online, I was shocked at how much they cost!

So, of course, I DIY’ed it! I found frames from Walmart and then purchased a printable PDF on Etsy, which I had printed at Staples. I’ve created my own versions of these motivational baseball quotes for you. You can download them for FREE!

The prints are 16 x 20. You can print a smaller version at home or have them printed professionally at an office supply store as I did.
Happy Birthday Shalia! Birthday wishes coming your way from Alberta Canada! Today it snowed. Oh well it will be spring soon!
Thank you so much for your sweet comment!!! I’m sure the snow is beautiful. I can’t wait for spring to be here!
Thanks for this post, I’m on the hunt for my pre-teen’s bedroom makeover and alot of what is in this makeover caught my eye. This is helpful, I love the tans and grey colors. Where did you get that awesome rug? I’m a fan of functional art. We also recently learned that my husband has Native American lineage and seeing that in your consideration really tugged the strings in my heart. Genius… how important it is to teach our children about our history. This is a great way to remind them.
Rose,
So happy you enjoyed the post. Thank you for your kind words. We agree that it’s important to teach our children about their lineage. About the rug, all that we have in our homes are sourced beneath “rugs” on the source and shop tab.
Have a blessed day.
I don’t see the link to this rug on your shop the home part. Do you have a name for it? Thank you for your time.
It was from Target but isn’t available any more.
What color and sheen is the trim painted?
Thanks
Renee,
It’s eggshell.
